Self-care is a waste of time and I don’t have time to waste!

I spent many years of my legal career dismissing “self-care”. I thought self-care was a fancy day at the spa - something far from my mind when my weeks consisted of long hours in the office and weekend work. Full of enthusiasm and ambition, I wanted to spend time on productive pastimes when I wasn’t working, like listening to podcasts and reading non-fiction books.

I did a 180 one day when I decided to apply a face mask, listen to calming music and focus on being present. To my surprise, I felt an unexpected sense of relaxation and clarity. The next day at work, I was more efficient, more productive and less anxious!

That day, I realised that self-care is not self-indulgent; it is an important component of mental clarity and productivity

If you still need convincing, consider the following benefits:

  1. Improved Mental and Physical Health:

    • Regular self-care provides a sense of control, lowering feelings of helplessness and stress levels.

    • Self-care improves mood, reduces anxiety and depression and builds emotional resilience.

    • Self-care routines such as exercise, rest and healthy eating boost energy levels and reduce fatigue.

  2. Increase in Productivity:

    • Taking breaks clears your mind, enabling you to work more efficiently and effectively.

    • A relaxing activity can give you perspective and stimulate creativity, leading to solutions and ideas you would not have thought of before.

  3. Sustainability and Work-Life Balance:

    • Self-care improves emotional regulation, leading to more positive interactions with others, which in turn improves mood

    • Self-care encourages introspection and self-reflection, which is important for personal growth.

    • Prioritising self-care, even in small ways, helps establish boundaries that empower you. This leads to greater job satisfaction and significantly reduces the risk of burnout.

For lawyers facing demanding workloads, dedicating time to self-care, even in small amounts, can greatly boost your efficiency while fostering a more balanced, fulfilling life and a sustainable career.
